Case study: Modec

Modec is the world’s first manufacturer of purpose-built zero emission vehicles.   Their ground-breaking 5.5 tonne commercial vehicle was designed from the start as an Electric Vehicle and not a conversion.  Modec then approached Axeon with a request to improve battery performance using lithium-ion technology.  Axeon designed a new lithium-ion battery that has enabled higher range and superior performance.

Axeon's custom-built battery pack uses lithium iron phosphate cells.  These are particularly suitable for Electric Vehicles because of the combination of energy and power density and their excellent safety profile. Lithium iron phosphate cells also offer a longer cycle life than alternative chemistries (1000 cycles).

Axeon's battery deploys our flexible Battery Management System, which manages the lithium-ion cells, delivering safe, durable performance.

Axeon's battery offers the following profile:

Energy Voltage Range Cubic Weight
51kWh 256V 70 miles 2300mm x 1060mm x 355mm  1062 kg

Modec has more commercial Electric Vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries on European roads than any other manufacturer. Axeon's batteries have been driven well over 250,000 customer miles and continue to deliver high performance.

Axeon realise that designing and manufacturing the products is only the first step in providing a complete customer solution.  Working with Modec, Axeon are in the process of setting up battery support services.  We are also working to help manage end-of-life in an environmentally sustainable way.

"Axeon's flexibility, rapid response and technical support have been key to Modec's success in developing the electric vehicle market"
